In a thrilling display of talent, Yakima's very own MarJon Beauchamp made his Philadelphia 76ers debut, leaving an indelible mark on the Pacific Northwest basketball scene. But here's where it gets intriguing: Beauchamp's path to the 76ers is a tale of perseverance and second chances.
Beauchamp, a 6-foot-7 forward, stepped onto the court at Portland's Moda Center on Monday night, ready to showcase his skills. He delivered an impressive stat line, scoring 10 points and contributing in multiple facets of the game. However, the Trail Blazers' dominant third quarter ultimately led to a 17-point defeat for the 76ers.
The connection between Beauchamp and the Pacific Northwest runs deep. Last offseason, the Blazers offered him a mini-camp invitation, followed by a training camp contract. Unfortunately, his time with the Blazers was short-lived, as he was waived less than two weeks later. Undeterred, Beauchamp signed an Exhibit 10 contract with Philadelphia, allowing him to shine for their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.
And this is the part most people miss: Beauchamp's consistent offensive prowess earned him a two-way contract with the 76ers in late December. He's now one of the 28 roster spots for the NBA G League Next Up Game, scheduled for Sunday as part of All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles. His stats speak volumes: a team-leading 24.3 points per game, along with 5.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists.
Beauchamp's NBA journey has taken him through four teams since the Milwaukee Bucks drafted him in 2022. With Paul George serving a suspension and forward Dominick Barlow recovering from illness, Beauchamp could find more opportunities to showcase his talent with the 76ers.
In other sports news, Central Washington's Carley Huber has been named the GNAC field athlete of the week. Huber, a senior from Emerald Ridge, excelled at the Riverfront Invitational in Spokane, taking third place in the pentathlon and setting a new school record in the 4x400-meter relay.
