Team Rocket's Shadow Pokémon Have Arrived, and They're Shaking Up the PvE Scene!
Trainers, get ready! The latest event, Precious Pals: Taken Over!, has unleashed a new wave of Shadow Pokémon, and it's time to analyze their impact on the PvE (Player versus Environment) battles. Team Rocket Grunts and their formidable leader, Giovanni, are back with a fresh roster of Pokémon that have been corrupted by their influence. But are these new Shadow Pokémon truly game-changers, or just more fodder for the grinder? Let's dive in and find out!
Meet the New Shadow Recruits!
This time around, we're seeing some familiar faces get the 'shadow treatment,' including the entire Kalos region's first partner Pokémon line and a powerful Legendary from Unova. The big question is: which of these Pokémon are worth the effort to rescue from Team Rocket's clutches?
Chespin → Chesnaught: The Grass-Type Powerhouse Emerges!
Remember Chespin, the Spiny Nut Pokémon from the Kalos region? Its final evolution, Chesnaught, has historically been a bit of an underdog in the PvE meta, often overshadowed by other Grass-type attackers. But here's where it gets exciting: The Shadow variant of Chesnaught is here to change all that!
Using advanced battle simulation tools, we've seen a dramatic increase in its Damage Per Second (DPS) compared to its regular counterpart. Shadow Chesnaught has not only surpassed the Mythical Shaymin (Sky Forme) but has also burst into the top 5 Grass-type raid attackers! With its potent Vine Whip Fast Attack and the devastating Frenzy Plant Charged Attack, Shadow Chesnaught is now a premier choice for taking down Water, Rock, and Ground-type raid bosses. However, on the Fighting front, the story isn't quite as impressive. Shadow Chesnaught still lags significantly behind the top-tier Fighting-type attackers in Pokémon GO.
Fennekin → Delphox: A Fiery Comeback with a Psychic Twist!
Next up is Fennekin, the Fox Pokémon, and its evolution, Delphox. Like its Grass-type counterpart, Shadow Delphox experiences a massive performance boost when compared to its non-shadow version. The numbers don't lie – its DPS has seen a significant leap!
Slyly, Shadow Delphox has slid into the #7 spot among top Fire-type raid attackers. It's now a versatile Fire attacker, with its Fire Spin Fast Attack and the powerful Blast Burn Charged Attack, capable of scorching Grass, Bug, Ice, and Steel raid bosses. Its Shadow-enhanced DPS even rivals some top Fire Legendaries like Reshiram! And this is the part most people miss: While its Fire typing gets a major upgrade, its Psychic typing also sees improvement. Shadow Delphox is now a decent mid-tier Psychic attacker, which is fantastic for newer players or those looking for more variety in their Psychic teams. However, for seasoned players seeking the absolute most efficient Psychic raid teams, Shadow Delphox might find it challenging to secure a spot.
Froakie → Greninja: The Water Assassin Strikes!
Rounding out the Kalos starters is Froakie, the Bubble Frog Pokémon, evolving into the swift Ninja Pokémon, Greninja. Once again, the Shadow treatment has transformed an often-overlooked Pokémon into a meta contender.
Stealthily, Shadow Greninja has outmaneuvered even Mega Gyarados to claim the #6 position among top Water-type raid attackers. While its damage output is incredible, keep in mind that its lower Total Damage Output (TDO) might affect its endurance in longer battles. Shadow Greninja truly shines as a Water-type assassin, with its Water Shuriken Fast Attack and the formidable Hydro Cannon Charged Attack delivering knockout blows against Fire, Rock, and Ground bosses. The Shadow boost significantly amplifies its damage, allowing it to compete with Mega-evolved Pokémon! As a Dark-type attacker, Shadow Greninja sees an improvement, but not enough to make a significant splash in the current Dark-type meta.
Thundurus (Incarnate Forme): A Legendary with Untapped Potential?
Finally, we have a Legendary from the Unova region, Thundurus (Incarnate Forme), a member of the 'Forces of Nature.' Sadly, this particular form of Thundurus struggles a bit with its current moveset and stats, especially when compared to its Therian Forme. Nevertheless, the analysis is still quite intriguing.
The real controversy lies with its signature move, Wildbolt Storm. This move is exceptionally rare and has a significant impact. It's important to note that Thundurus (Therian Forme) is undeniably the superior version, boasting better stats and a more advantageous moveset. However, we're focusing on the Incarnate Forme here. As it stands, Shadow Thundurus (Incarnate Forme) with Thunder Shock and Thunder Punch is a decent Electric-type raid attacker, but the heavy investment required to power it up might not be fully justified, as Pokémon like Shadow Luxray and Shadow Vikavolt outperform it in Electric-type raids.
But here's where it gets truly interesting: Thundurus (Incarnate Forme) cannot learn Wildbolt Storm, not even with an Elite Charged TM. The only Incarnate Thundurus that had access to this powerful move was encountered during a special Timed Research event in 2025. If, in the future, Shadow Thundurus (Incarnate Forme) were to gain access to Wildbolt Storm, it would skyrocket to become the second-best Electric-type attacker, second only to its Therian Forme counterpart. For now, though, it remains somewhat of an outlier.
Final Thoughts: Shadow Pokémon - Worth the Hunt?
The Shadow treatment has undeniably worked wonders for the Kalos starters, transforming Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie into formidable PvE contenders that punch well above their weight. Shadow Chesnaught has crashed the Grass-type elite, Shadow Delphox is a fiery force with a useful Psychic secondary role, and Shadow Greninja has stealthily climbed the ranks in Water-type battles – each showcasing that signature Shadow DPS boost to dismantle raid bosses with ease. Thundurus (Incarnate Forme) remains the underdog, with Wildbolt Storm hinting at a potential it can't currently fully unleash.
