Unwrapping the UK's Most Disappointing Christmas Gifts: A Survey by Which?
The holiday season is a time of joy and celebration, but it can also be a minefield of well-intentioned but misguided gifts. A recent survey by Which? has shed light on the most disappointing Christmas presents received in the UK, with some results that might make you question the thoughtfulness of your loved ones.
The survey, conducted in January 2025, involved over 2,000 participants who shared their experiences with Christmas gifts. When asked about the worst gifts they had ever received, respondents revealed a range of underwhelming presents, including used pyjamas, rotten fruit, marmite-scented deodorant, and a Tottenham Hotspur book for a Chelsea fan.
One particularly memorable story came from a respondent who received a helicopter ride as a gift from their daughter, despite the respondent having vertigo and a fear of flying. This highlights the importance of considering the recipient's interests, preferences, and circumstances when choosing a gift.
According to Which?, approximately one in five people received an unwanted or unsuitable gift for Christmas 2024. When asked about their disposal options, 33% of respondents said they kept the gift and intended to use it, while 15% kept it but had no plans to use it. Interestingly, 34% admitted to getting rid of the gift, with 12% giving it to a friend or family member, 11% donating it to a charity shop, and 8% selling it online.
Lisa Webb, a consumer law expert, emphasized the importance of gift receipts, stating, "It's hard to think of a more disappointing present than used pyjamas or rotten fruit, but our research shows that a fifth of us have been left wondering what to do with an unwanted gift. Getting a gift receipt is always a good idea, ensuring the recipient has the option to return the gift if needed."
For online orders, Webb also noted that only the buyer can typically request a refund or exchange. However, if the item was marked as a gift during the ordering process, the retailer's returns policy may allow the recipient to return or exchange it.
